Energy: The Appalachians is rich in energy resources that meet national and regional demands for energy. As wind, natural gas, and oil energy development expand along with traditional coal, there is an increasing need for research to inform discussions on how to meet immediate and future energy needs while sustaining the health of natural places, biodiversity, and cultural resources that provide essential benefits to large cities and surrounding human communities.

Ecosystem Benefits & Risks: The FWS collaborated with the U.S. Forest Service to assess the benefits of and risks to the region's "ecosystem services" -- natural assets valued by people such as clean drinking water, outdoor recreation, forest products, and biological conservation. A wealth of data, maps, and other knowledge on ecosystem services and risks to their sustainability are now available and provide regional resources and tools for planners, managers, and the interested public.
