Position Available - Interdisciplinary (Air and Water Program Manager) Ecologist or Physical Scientist
The employee is responsible for program development and implementation related to air, air quality related values (e.g., visibility, water and soil chemistry, impacts of ozone, fish communities, etc.) water resources, and related physical science disciplines.
The person selected manages long-term air monitoring and water chemistry monitoring/research programs that span nearly three and a half decades. This crucial park position shares efforts in mitigating/restoring damage to ecosystems and collaborating with many national and regional experts to deliver the compelling science products - used directly by the EPA to evaluate national regulatory programs and used by the public to make a difference in their footprint. Shenandoah’s programs are recognized as setting the standards in the region (and nationally) in air/water quality and we seek the recognized expertise and program leadership to continue and grow this work.
Shenandoah National Park straddles the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains at the western edge of the Virginia Piedmont and eastern edge of Shenandoah Valley. Communities surrounding the park are rural with small towns and cities nearby. The Baltimore-Washington DC metropolitan area is within a 1.5 hour drive of the park. All four seasons can be enjoyed with lots of recreational opportunities (hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, climbing, biking, etc.) close by and others (historic sites, museums, theaters, ski resorts, and concert halls) within reasonable driving distances.
