Many new remote sensing applications have emerged that rely on satellite image time series since the US Geological Survey and Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research began freely distributing Landsat data. In our work in tropical forest landscapes, we have been thrilled to find that the height and productivity of tropical secondary forests can be mapped with Landsat image time series, even in persistently cloudy places. We have also found that free access to the entire history of Landsat imagery over an area benefits our work not only from directly processing the time series data, but also simply from the ability to view the entire archive of Landsat data at full spatial resolution. I will describe studies in which we used image time series to map forest vertical structure for avian habitat studies, to estimate secondary forest productivity, and to map tropical forest type to extremely detailed levels.
