Adding Files

How to upload files in the portal.

Files of various types can be uploaded to Plone web sites.

Choose file in the Add new... menu for a folder to upload a file:

You will see the Add File panel:

Add File image for help.

Provide a Title. Add a Description. Add the year that the file was created in the Publication Date field. Add the file's author in the Author field. Click the Choose File button to navigate to the file you want to upload from your local computer. Tags are required if you want your items to be made available in other areas of the portal, or if you want to make your items more likely to be picked up by search engines (both internal and external). All other fields are optional. When you click the save button the file will be uploaded to the folder.

Example file types include PDF files, Word documents, database files, zip files... -- well, practically anything.  Files on a Plone web site are treated as just files and will show up in contents lists for folders, but there won't be any special display of them. They will appear by name in lists and will be available for download if clicked.

*Note: PDFs that are uploaded to the site have a special functionality built in for extracting cover images to be used as thumbnails. After uploading and saving your PDF, an Extract Cover Image option is available for the Action menu. This will convert the first page of your PDF into a thumbnail image for display in search, folders, and collections.
