Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership

The Center for Native Peoples and the Environment at the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science & Forestry is recruiting students for graduate study in diverse environmental sciences from ecology, sustainability, conservation biology to restoration and environmental engineering. As a member of the Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership, the program provides funding for full tuition and stipends for Native American students pursuing MS and PhD degrees.

Tribal Stewards Inclusion Crews: Northwest Youth Corps

Our Tribal Stewards Inclusion Crews aim to inspire the next generation of Tribal land stewards. Tribal Stewards leaders and members complete work projects with the guidance and mentorship of trained conservation professionals. Emphasis is placed on holistic development, on the basis that healthy land supports healthy people.
The Tribal Stewards Inclusion Crews follow our Youth Camping program structure and combine education and job skill training with outdoor adventure for 16 to 19 year olds.

Intertribal Agriculture Council: Technical Assistance Network

The Technical Assistance Network provides direct assistance with USDA program access - outreach, eligibility, applications, and contract implementation support as needed. The Technical Assistance Network also leverages partnerships, supports project development, government-to-government relations, and focuses on resource identification to meet individual producer and Tribal community priorities related to agriculture, land management, and community development.

Range Rider Pilot Project
-
A collaborative effort between Conservation Northwest and local ranchers, the Range Rider Pilot Project seeks to demonstrate the effectiveness of non-lethal measures in deterring or reducing conflicts where wolves and livestock overlap in Washington state. We also coordinate with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), independent wolf experts, scientists and other partners to support range riding efforts.

A little more than a year ago, the Haida Nation released the Land-Sea-People plan to manage Gwaii Haanas, off the coast of northern British Columbia, "from mountaintop to seafloor as a single, interconnected ecosystem."
It's an innovative conservation effort that demonstrates how the Haida Nation and Canada's federal government can achieve biodiversity targets, protect the rights of Indigenous people and encourage collaboration among communities, governments and society. And it's an example of what we need more of to meet conservation objectives in the coming decade.
The Aichi Targets for biodiversity conservation date back to 2010 and provided nations with the goalposts for the protection of species and habitats. Each of the 194 signatories to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was expected to meet all 20 targets by December 2020—ranging from preventing the extinction of threatened species to expanding protected area coverage. But few of the targets have been adequately met...
